How Having a Vision Can Transform the Way You Shop at Goodwill

I'm fresh off my Goodwill Reclaimed Fashion high and thought I would share my biggest tip during the “Become a Flipping Expert” panel I was honored to be a part of.

I would like to mention I shared the stage with some amazing resellers. Crystal @designertreasurehunt, Keira @stylemefair, and Jackie @hittheroadjackiee, you ladies are insanely beautiful, talented, and so fun to be around.

One of the last questions for me went something like this:

“You shop exclusively on dollar day and the clearance center, what’s your tip for finding such great pieces?”

Sure, many factors can contribute to this (time, day, location, etc), but nothing quite makes a difference as much as having a VISION.

Yup, that’s it.

When I shop at Goodwill, I don’t just go in with a plan, intention, and high hopes of finding some killer items. I go in with an open mind and the creativity to make something of what others would consider nothing.

Let’s take the two-piece suit I wore at the event for example.

I found the set at the Goodwill Clearance Center a few weeks ago and immediately knew the possibilities. Right away, I planned to cut the pants into shorts and wear a lace bralette underneath.

Once I got home, I realized the shoulders were big, but that’s nothing some alterations can’t fix.

My outfit was a hit and I got so many compliments from friends and attendees.

While answering my question during the panel, I said something along the lines of “I let Goodwill tell me what to wear.” It sounds silly, I know. But sometimes that’s the beauty in thrifting, you’re invited to try something you could have never imagined.

Talk about stepping out of your comfort zone.

Remember that style is all about being personal. It’s your unique identity, and there’s no reason why you should look like everyone else in the room. So, next time you’re out thrifting, keep an open mind and let your creativity run loose!
